About Anorexia Nervosa

The word “anorexia” literally means “loss of appetitive.” In most simple terms, is self starvation. It is typically describe as ‘walking skeleton’ a graphic image that depicts the pallor and frailty of these struggling individuals.

Anorexia is a serious and complex psychiatric disorder and also referred to as mental illness. Although people with anorexia are always hungry, they take pride in denying hunger, feeling more in control and independent.

Its symptoms include a severe disturbance in eating behavior, the inability or refusal to maintain a healthy body weight, and an intense fear of gaining weight.

Anorexics are also often characterized as stubborn, vain, appearance-obsessed people who simply do not know when to stop dieting.

Some cultures predispose to anorexia nervosa. Present western culture may increase the risk with its emphasis on thinness, skeletal; super models, and dieting behavior as a norm for young women.

This belief has very dangerous consequences. If anorexia progresses far enough, you can lose massive amounts of body weight enough to cause psychological problems, physical problems and even death.

Anorexia nervosa is quite a rare illness. The sense of isolation and loneliness which occurs when the person face the problem makes things worse.
