The meaning of calories

The energy released from carbohydrates, fats, and proteins can be measured in calories – tiny units of energy so small that a single apple provides tens of thousands of them.

Calories in food are measurable. Food energy is measured in kilocalories (kcalorie or calorie). It is the amount of heat energy necessary to raise the temperature of a kilogram of water I degree Celsius.

The most energy rich of the nutrients are fat, which contains 9 calories in each gram. Carbohydrate and protein each contain only 4 calories in a gram. It should be noted that alcohol furnishes 7 calories per gram and must therefore be given concentration on the calorie count in any weight reducing attempt.

The size does not indicate number. An apple can provide about the same number of calories as a teaspoon of salad oil. Apples are mostly water and have few calories for their weight. Salad oil, in contrast is concentrated fat.
