What are the causes of overweight?
The causes of overweight and obesity are complex and multifactorial. Obesity is defined as an excessively high amount of body fat or adipose tissue in relation to lean body mass.
There are four major contributing factors that increase the likelihood that someone can became overweight:
*Behavior –eating too many calories teamed with not getting enough physical activity. Overweight and obesity are linked to poor diet (USDA, 2005). More calories consumed than expended are the major contributing factors to the prevalence of overweight and obesity in US.
*Environment and socioeconomic – home, work, school and community significantly influence opportunities for an active lifestyle
*Biological traits – hereditary plays a large role in determination how susceptible people are to overweight and obesity. A survey of the research (National Institutes of Health, 2007) indicates that a child with one overweight parent is 40% more likely to be overweight and a child with two overweight parents is more than 80% more likely to be overweight.
*Psychological factors
