The reason people become anorexic

Individuals with eating disorders know there are a lot of perceived benefits to restricting, bingeing and purging.

The anorexic does not always believe that she is overweight. She may acknowledge that she is thin but wants to be even thinner, and is still bothered by certain aspects of her body that she insists are too big.

Prime areas of dissatisfaction are the abdomen, buttocks and thighs. The anorexic has an intense fear of gaining weight and often weighs herself obsessively, constantly assesses her figure in the mirror, or makes up other ingenious ways measuring fat.

There are many websites use text, photos and videos to encourage people to engage in disordered-eating behaviors. Many contain so-called thinspiration gallery emaciated models and celebrities accompanied by dieting slogans.

Most contain tips and tricks for restricting, purging and exercising. Although anorexics often perceive themselves to be very well educated in matters of nutrition and exercise, they may, in fact, harbor many conceptions about these topics.

One common misconception is that people become anorexic because they are self-absorbed, vain individuals who place too much importance on their looks. Normally they want to seeks control over themselves and their lives.

Food and weight can be controlled when other aspects of ;life cannot, and indeed significant events, such as leaving home for the first time, a divorce or a serious illness are examples of out of control situations which can trigger anorexia.

They are aware of the serious medical consequences of anorexia often find it hard to believe that their own case is dire enough to result in such problems. When they finally do realize it is, the patterns of self starvation are often too entrenched, and the anorexic tries to hide his or her disorder and deny any medical problems.
