Self-starvation symptoms

Major body systems can be affected by eating disorders, including the cardiovascular, endocrine, gastrointestinal, reproductive, dermatological, and hematological systems.

Endocrine function becomes deranged during starvation. Pituitary gonadotrophin secretion is greatly depressed in starvation and this manifest itself outwardly in a cessation of menstruation in starving women.

Physical symptoms commonly result from self-starvation (e.g. self-induced vomiting, laxative misuse) and compensatory behaviors. Extreme weight loss from self –starvation is known to be related to cardiac arrhythmia, bradycardia, and amenorrhea.

Some symptoms are particular associated with anorexics such as excessive growth of dry brittle facial and body hair.

The secondary problems that result from self-starvation include depression, social withdrawal, irritability and insomnia.
